"Subtext presents a remix of Cevdet Erek’s Flow 1, taken from his 2017 LP “Davul,” by Istanbul based Naci Tepedelen. The remix is accompanied by a video Naci made with footage from, in, and around the Istanbul rapid transit system.
"The work was initiated by a conversation between Cevdet and Naci during a series of individual research meetings at ITU MIAM. The focus of the meetings was on exploring what gives particular rhythms a natural feel and Naci’s specific wish to work with the Davul album material in some capacity. During these conversations, upon Naci's expressing unhappiness with his immediate environment, Cevdet suggested that Naci could start photographing and documenting his neighborhood, and question whether a shift in perspective was possible, even in a very dense, depressing Istanbul suburb.
The images emerged and disappeared, but the process that was set in motion led Naci to start experimenting with the juxtaposition of films from the perspective of the Istanbul metro with the external environment above and beyond this networked system, such as the nature on Princess Island. Naci’s remix expands the original’s focus on the microscopic nuances of a solo improvised drum performance, reimagining it, re-editing it, recomposing it with itself, in order to take the viewer around without leading through the heavily developed and continuous megapolis which is their home, with moments that evoke the breath like moments of pause: landscapes and waters that are connected and disconnected by the trains below."
